π¦ The Box π
Art Ending Torture
The scene is dramatic and grim.
Four men stand, sit, or lie down, each on a six-foot by nine-foot steel rectangle illuminated on the edges π²β¨.
Propped on a stand at one end is a 12-inch by 6-inch rectangleβ¦ thatβs where the food comes in π.
This is βThe Boxβ, an extraordinary stage play credited with helping end juvenile solitary confinement in California π.
The play was written by Sarah Shourd, a former political prisoner who was incarcerated in Iran for over 400 days πβοΈ.
Released in 2010, she has since collaborated with inmates and activists to end solitary confinement in U.S. prisons πͺπ.
The cast and crew include formerly incarcerated individuals, and the powerful script draws its dialogue from the stories of survivors π£οΈπ. One of the characters, Ray De Vaul, had been in solitary confinement for over 17 years π.
Solitary confinement is torture, and while this play often brings its audience to tears π’, it also inspires many to get involved in restorative justice and collective healing β€οΈβπ©Ή.
You can get involved too, at EndOfIsolationTour.org π, where you can donate to stop this torture in America π.
βThe Boxβ is art that imitates life, truly making a difference in the lives of others πβ¨.
