Motorcycle Midwives
Bikers Delivering Babies
Bangkok's traffic is so gridlocked that pregnant women often get stuck giving birth in it, while trying to get to the hospital.
It’s a city with over six million drivers and only half the roads it needs.
In response, the “Royal Traffic Police Project” has employed over one hundred motorcycle cops, armed with full medical kits and trained in basic midwifery, including how to tie an umbilical cord and how to clear obstructions from a baby's airway.
Multiple teams are placed in most bottlenecked areas where ambulances can't reach stranded motorists fast enough.
These cops weave in and out of traffic on their "baby beat", ready to give roadside birthing assistance, or clear traffic to rush their charges to the nearest hospital.
They carry raincoats to shield the women from curious onlookers and follow up after, to ensure that mother and baby are doing fine.
The program teaches the officers compassion, while addressing urban planning problems and building local ties with the community.
Since its inception in 1993, these ‘motorcycle midwives’ have delivered hundreds of babies and rushed countless more moms to delivery rooms, bringing a labor of love—along with plenty of epic birth stories—to the streets of Bangkok.
