Helping the Abuser
Stopping Abuse at the Source
Domestic violence is a global problem. ๐๐
And it is essential, of course, that victims of abuse receive all the support they can get. ๐ค๐
But what about the abuser? โ Why are they like this, and what can be done to help them? And keep them from committing violence again? โ
In Britain, there is a program that provides guidance for domestic violence perpetrators.๐
Called the โRespect Phoneline,โ it offers counseling and options for those who recognize their own abusive behavior and seek to stop it. ๐๐ฃ๏ธ
The confidential program receives over 6,000 calls, texts, and live-chats annually. ๐ฒ๐ฌ
Their motto is โChoose to Stopโ โโ and the fact that a person has reached out at all indicates they want help. This is the first step to stopping the abuse. ๐๐ก
Without invoking shame, their website, RespectPhoneline.org.uk, offers questions that guide individuals to find the help they need. ๐๐งญ
Batterer intervention is about learning new ways to deal with difficult emotions and changing well-worn patterns of aggressive behavior. ๐๐ญ
We are all born innocent and gentle, but life and even our families can teach us to be violent. ๐ถโก๏ธ๐
Unlike any other crime, Love โค๏ธ is what makes domestic violence so complicated.
But itโs also Love โค๏ธ that can compel healing and positive change. โจ๐
